1st Fully-automated Laser Countermeasures Lab

El Segundo, CA:

In 1982 I developed the 1st fully-automated laser countermeasures characterization facility.

It was in a basement, with metal mesh in the walls to prevent electronic surveillance. It was before PCs, and to get a mini-computer without 3 years of paperwork I had to order all the parts for one as a list of spares, while convincing the vendor to kindly assemble them before delivery.

In this lab, we determined how to defeat our night vision sensors with lasers. And how to defeat all the competition’s sensors! Laser weapons were like a game of cat and mouse back then, much like network security today: for every countermeasure, there is an equal and opposite counter-countermeasure, and the game will never end…
